Ok, so stayed up way past my bedtime last night to watch 'A New Tomorrow' (it screened at 01:40 here as we are 1 hour ahead of the UK). Hope I can remember some of it as I was pretty sleepy!
It opened with some shots of rustling tree branches, and then launched straight into some b&w footage of the moment when brian collapsed at the japanese summersonic festival - you didn't see him collapse but you saw his feet as he was lying on the ground, with Steve in the background anxiously telling someone what had happened, apparently Brian also hit his head as he fell. Then you saw him being carried away and placed on the ground again further away at the side of the stage. Poor Brian! Come over here, and I will kiss it better

During this Brian is narrating, talking about the intense Asian tour. Then some talking about the first Japanese show, and the accompanying press obligations, including much footage from the Japanese radio interview where fans were crushed outside the windows taking pictures the whole time. Brian expresses much surprise at the number and commitment of the Japanese fans, and also comments on the fact that the whole band had to get up at 5 am, he had hair and makeup at 6 am and then the interview at 7am - they've never been up so early before! he also mentions his unease with being in Japan, jetlagged, not knowing what the fans will be like or the reception they will get, but it all turns out good and the show goes well with fans following them everywhere. Lots of shots of night-time Tokyo, food, people etc. Placebo then move on to the other Asian cities (Taipei, somewhere in Korea, and then back to Japan). Brian talks about how exhausting the touring schedule is, now they are 4 months into the tour they are all starting to feel the strain. And how much they travel, how much time they spend in impersonal hotels and airport queues (footage of the band traipsing tiredly through airports, Stefan looking out the huge window of his hotel room, a series of faceless - but very nice! - hotel rooms). brian states that the time they spend flying and fulfilling press obligations negates the actual time they get to spend on stage, that stage time is like free time for them. He also takes about how he hates flying, and that each time he steps on the plane he is statistically one step closer to death (!). he talks about how he has to keep doiong what he is doing, he doesn't know how to do anything else, what else could he do? (oh, brian, ye of little faith in yourself! there is so much you could do...like come and hang out with me, any old time!) The band head back to Japan for the last Asian show, and Steve has fallen sick - they joke that it is swine flu (shots of a piece of paper someone has printed out with a photoshopped steve with a pig's nose, i think?) and they all avoid him (Brian jokes that now Steve knows what it is like to be a poet). The documentary ends with b&w footage of the band running on stage at Summersonic to huge applause, then the screen goes blank and writing appears saying that minutes after this footage was shot brian collapsed on stage and had to be carried off. The band subsequently had to cancel their US tour, but plan to be back in Japan in early 2010. It finished with the same shot of rustling leaves.
It's true that it was quite a melancholy little view of their lives - you really got a sense of their exhaustion. It was fascinating to see behind the scenes, at the effort it takes to get the show on the road. But I wanted more! I felt it could have been longer, and more in-depth. Oh, and my pet hate - crappy opening titles. Perhaps they are saving the extra footage for another documentary later...
I hope I remembered this all correctly! And I really hope some lovely person in the Uk can manage to copy it for everyone to enjoy.
