Brian Molko: "El nuevo disco es uno de los trabajos más complejos que hemos hecho"El líder del trío londinense Placebo conversó con La Tercera sobre su séptimo álbum.

Partió de una conversación casual que escuchó Brian Molko (40 años), el cantante del trío de británico Placebo: “"engo demasiados amigos, necesito borrarlos". Para un hombre que no tiene Facebook ni Twitter, la pura frase servía como inspiración. Así, Molko escribió la canción Too many friends, un tema que lleva de regreso a Placebo a sus rincones familiares: angustia juvenil y envoltura rock, enérgico y sombrío a la vez.
"A la gente se le hace difícil alejarse del teléfono. Tienen miedo de estar a solas con sus pensamientos. Las redes sociales se han vuelto tan importantes, que han sido el mayor desastre cultural de los últimos años", dice el cantante, fumando en un hotel de Berlín, donde recibe a La Tercera de negro absoluto, bototos, melena y los ojos maquillados. Too many friends es también el último single de Placebo, que sirve de presentación para Loud like love, el séptimo disco de estudio del grupo, ya disponible en Chile. Es el más reciente esfuerzo de una banda al borde de los 20 años de existencia, que ha vendido cerca de 12 millones de discos y que busca sostener la flama de su primera era, cuando irrumpieron en el panorama global bajo la bendición de David Bowie.
El disco suena crudo, urgente. ¿Era el primer objetivo?Tratamos de no intelectualizar lo que está pasando. Las canciones empiezan a dominar al álbum y tienes que seguir porque también te toman a ti. Nunca establecimos hacer un álbum llamando Loud like love; fue mediante el proceso que vimos que era una cosa unificada. Es uno de los álbumes más complejos y con más texturas que hemos hecho, más ecléctico que el anterior (Battle for the sun).
¿Cuándo nace el impulso de trabajar un nuevo álbum?Por accidente. Decidí tomarme casi un año para enfocarme en ser padre. Entremedio, firmamos un nuevo contrato con Universal y nos pidieron un single. Fuimos al estudio con un nuevo productor, Adam Noble, y pensamos que era mejor hacer un EP, algo para darles a los fans. Así se gestó B3, que lanzamos el año pasado. Lo pasamos bien con Noble y empezamos a trabajar en el álbum sin darnos cuenta. Resistimos la tentación de hacer un disco largo, porque queríamos que la gente pudiera escucharlo de nuevo cuando termina.
¿Cómo equilibran el interés rockero con la sensibilidad romántica?Es romántico, pero no tiene 10 canciones de amor. Quisimos explorar el lado ritual del amor: celos, corazones rotos, obsesiones. Lo veo como una colección de historias, que se acercan al mismo objetivo desde distintos ángulos.
Se escucha un interés por tratar las relaciones en la era digital.No estoy en las redes sociales. Tengo poco tiempo para estar en contacto con mis amigos en el mundo físico, por lo que no puedo entender cómo dedicar tiempo a alguien que no conozco. Todos los días veo gente que están físicamente próximos, pero ya no están conectados entre ellos.
¿Qué clase de relación tienen con la audiencia chilena?Es fantástica. Son realmente diferentes. Chile fue uno de los lugares en Latinoamérica donde nuestra historia explotó. Junto a México, fueron los lugares donde empezó la “placebomanía”.
La última vez que tocaron en Chile (2010) donaron sus ganancias a las víctimas del terremoto. ¿Qué respuesta recibieron?
Iba camino al aeropuerto en Londres para viajar a Chile, cuando recibí un mensaje de texto de mi mánager que decía “el Presidente (Piñera) quiere conocerlos”. Aterrizamos y fuimos directo a la casa presidencial. Eticamente, no podíamos ir a Chile después del terremoto y decir “lo sentimos por la gente que murió y las personas que perdieron su hogar”, tocar, cobrar y partir. Por eso no quise donar sólo una parte, sino todas las ganancias. De otro modo no hubiera podido mirarme al espejo o dormir en la noche.
Anunciaron un tour mundial, que incluye Sudamérica. ¿Cuándo regresa a Chile?No puedo dar fecha, pero va a pasar. Incluiremos México, Perú, Brasil, Chile y Argentina. Vamos a tocar música ruidosa. Espero coleccionar euforia. Un show es mágico cuando la audiencia y los músicos se encuentran en un punto sinérgico. Siempre nos ha sucedido en Chile y esperamos que pase otra vez. En 2014 estaremos de vuelta.

How do you balance the interest rocker with romantic sensibility ?It is romantic , but it has 10 songs of love. We wanted to explore the ritual side of love: jealousy, broken hearts , obsessions . I see it as a collection of stories that are close to the same target from different angles.
Interest is heard address the relationships in the digital age .I'm on social networks . I have little time to get in touch with my friends in the physical world , so I can not spend time understanding how someone who does not know. Every day I see people who are physically close , but they are not connected to each other .
What kind of relationship they have with the Chilean audience ?
It's great. They are really different . Chile was one of the places in Latin America where our story exploded. Along with Mexico , were the places where he began the " placebomanía " .
The last time they played in Chile ( 2010 ) donated their winnings to the victims of the earthquake. What response did you receive?Was on my way to the airport in London to travel to Chile, when I received a text message from my manager saying " the President ( Piñera ) wants to know " . We landed and went straight to the presidential palace . Ethically , we could not go to Chile after the earthquake and say "sorry for the people who died and those who lost their home," playing , charging and starting .
