Placebo gebruikte smartphone-apps voor album

Het zevende album van de band Placebo werd deels opgenomen met smartphones. "We proberen steeds iets nieuws uit. Dit keer hebben we apps op telefoons gebruikt als instrumenten", zegt Brian Molko tegen NU.nl.

"De applicaties die we gebruikten waren er alleen om nog meer ongebruikelijke geluiden toe te voegen. De basis bestaat nog steeds uit ouderwetse instrumentatie."

"Ook handgeklap en de strijkers komen niet uit een apparaatje. Het voelde een beetje als de vrijheid van een kind. Je kan alle mogelijke geluiden tevoorschijn halen."

Het eindresultaat is Loud Like Love. "Het was lang geleden dat we zo'n revolutie doormaakten in de studio", zegt de frontman van Placebo. "Ik weet nog dat we met een scheermesje stukken tape probeerden door te snijden."

Producer Adam Noble, getipt door de Belgische band dEUS, gaf Placebo de ruimte om te experimenteren met apps. "Het is makkelijk, je hoeft er geen noten voor te lezen", aldus bassist Stefan Olsdal. "En instrumenten waar je normaal duizenden euro's aan kwijt bent, staan nu gratis op je telefoon."

Herhaling

Op Loud Like Love, de opvolger van de ambitieuze en Amerikaans klinkende voorganger Battle For The Sun, laat de band in tien nummers een nieuwe, frisse kant van zichzelf horen. "Als je meer dan twintig jaar speelt, wil je niet in herhaling vallen", zegt Olsdal.

"De echte fans zullen verrast zijn. Het is niet iets wat we al eerder gedaan hebben", vult Molko aan. "Maar onze identiteit is behouden gebleven. We zijn op zoek gegaan naar een nieuw geluid, maar we wijken niet ver af van eerder werk."

Uitgekauwd

Op het album staan alle aspecten van de liefde centraal. Molko probeerde verschillende kanten te belichten, van hartstocht tot jaloezie en obsessie. "Het is een uitgekauwd thema en daarom juist een uitdaging om erover te zingen. En niet alleen positief en zorgeloos, maar soms ook wat dramatischer."

"Muziek die je tegelijkertijd blij en verdrietig maakt, vind ik prachtig", verklaart drummer Steve Forrest, die zich zes jaar geleden bij de band voegde. "We hebben geprobeerd om dat op dit album te bereiken. We wilden het beste uit een liedje halen en dat tien keer."

Elpee

Dat het album slechts tien nummers bevat, is een klein detail in de discografie van Placebo. "Eerst wilde ik nooit een even aantal nummers op een album", legt Nolko uit. "Maar dit keer voelt het eindelijk goed. Je kan het ook zien als twee kanten van een elpee. Met 46 minuten is de plaat niet korter dan de andere albums."

"De plaat is ook goed in twee helften te verdelen", vindt Olsdal. "Een soort hoopvolle, zorgeloze inleiding en vervolgens wordt de sfeer donkerder en dramatischer. Je kan het zien als de levensloop van een relatie. Je begint vol energie en goede hoop, maar komt vaak toch tegenslagen tegen."

Ontdekken

Het schrijven van teksten binnen het thema gebeurt altijd op dezelfde manier, aldus Molko. "Ik besluit nooit van tevoren waar een nummer of album over gaat, maar ik ontdek het tijdens het proces. Of iemand anders uit de band heeft in de gaten waar ik daadwerkelijk over zing."

"Maar ik probeer er altijd een soort gimmick of opvallend element aan toe te voegen. Zoals in Too Many Friends, waarbij de eerste zinnen de luisteraar meteen overvallen. Tegenwoordig draait alles om het grijpen van de aandacht. Met Placebo hebben we daar inmiddels genoeg ervaring in opgedaan."

"The real fans will be surprised. It's not something we have done before ," adds to Molko . " But our identity is preserved. We went looking for a new sound , but we do not deviate far from earlier work . "

The album features all aspects of the love heart . Molko tried to highlight , from passion to jealousy and obsession . Different sides "It's an overused theme and therefore as a challenge to sing about it . And not only positive and carefree, but sometimes more dramatic . "

" Music that makes you happy and sad at the same time , I feel wonderful ," says drummer Steve Forrest , who six years ago joined the band . "We tried to achieve . On this album we wanted to make the most of a song and that ten times . "

LP

That the album contains only ten tracks , is a small detail in the discography of Placebo . "At first I never wanted an even number of songs on an album ," explains Nolko out . " But this time finally feels right . You can also see it as two sides of an LP . With 46 minutes the plate is not shorter than the other albums . "

" The board is also good to divide into two halves ," says Olsdal . " A kind of hopeful , carefree introduction and then the atmosphere darker and more dramatic . You can see it as the life of a relationship . You start full of energy and good hope , but often still setbacks against . "

Writing texts within the theme always happens the same way , says Molko . "I never decide in advance where a song or album is about, but I find it during the process . Whether someone else from the band in the holes where I actually sing . "

" But I always try to have some sort of gimmick or striking element to add . As Too Many Friends , the first sentences the listener immediately attacked . Nowadays it's all about grabbing the attention . With Placebo 's here now enough experience in gained . "
