In einem Hotel am Wiener Ring trafen wir Steve Forrest von Placebo zum Interview. Wir sprachen mit dem charmanten Drummer über das aktuelle Album Loud Like Love und ließen uns das Debakel vom Frequency Festival 2012 noch einmal erklären!

Hey Steve! Geht’s dir gut?
Ja, mir geht’s immer noch bestens! Auch nach vier Tagen voller herumreisen und Interviews geben.

Du bist jetzt seit fast sechs Jahren in der Band. Fühlst du dich als vollwertiges Mitglied, auch wenn es die Band schon lang vorher gab?
Das hab ich von Anfang an. Die Jungs hatten eine tolle Art, sodass ich mich willkommen fühlte. Als ich dazukam, wusste ich nicht, wie groß die Band war bzw. dass sie überhaupt existierte! Es war für mich also nicht, als würde ich zu Placebo stoßen. Ich freute mich eher darauf, mit ein paar Burschen Musik zu machen! Musikalisch war von Tag eins die richtige Chemie da. Privat hatten Brian und Stefan natürlich auch einen Draht, die kennen sich schließlich schon ewig! Ich wusste, dass sie ihr Ding hatten und ich mich daran und an sie gewöhnen musste. In den letzten Jahren haben wir aber so viel durchgemacht, das hat uns zusammengeschweißt. Besonders die Aufnahmen zum Album jetzt. Das hört man den Liedern an, diese Einheit, zu der wir geworden sind. Wir sind jetzt wie Brüder.

Euer neues Album heißt Loud Like Love und ist der bisher positivste Albumtitel. Woher kommt’s?
Während der Aufnahmen hatten wir eine gute Zeit! Man kann nicht immer über Negatives schreiben! Das Leben ist nicht nur negativ, es hat auch schöne Seiten! Loud Like Love war der erste Track des Albums, den wir geschrieben haben. Als wir jammten, kam Brian mit der Phrase ‘Loud Like Love’. Wir waren sofort begeistert und haben uns dann näher damit beschäftigt, um es zum wiederkehrenden Thema zu machen. Wir wollten aber keine typischen ‘Ich liebe dich, komm zurück’-Lieder machen. Wir wollten über Liebe mit all ihren Seiten schreiben. ‘Laut wie die Liebe’ ist für uns ein Orgasmus, ein weinendes Baby, ein Football-Match oder auch ein schönes Gemälde, das man tagelang anstarrt – ein abstraktes Kunstwerk, das einen anschreit, aber nicht hörbar ist. Oder wie man sich fühlt, wenn ein Familienmitglied stirbt. Wir fanden es spannend, es so zu betrachten.

Ihr seid also nicht ins Studio gegangen und habt beschlossen, über Beziehungen von Menschen zueinander zu schreiben? In vielen eurer alten Songs ging es ja eher um die Beziehung von Menschen zu Drogen.
Das tut es noch! Nein, Scherz! Bei den letzten paar Alben und EPs die ich mit den Jungs gemacht habe, haben wir uns nie vorher zusammengesetzt, um zu besprechen, was genau wir machen. Es kommt immer darauf an, wie man während des Schreibens drauf ist.

Wieso habt ihr euch für Too Many Friends und Loud Like Love als Singleauskopplungen entschieden?
Sobald wir Loud Like Love geschrieben hatten wussten wir, es würde eine Single werden. Wir konnten nicht aufhören, es zu spielen oder zu hören! Es ist immer noch mein Lieblingstrack des Albums! Ich liebe sie zwar alle, aber der Song ist was Besonderes. Er ist sexy, cool und macht Spaß! Das war also eine klare Wahl. Ich persönlich dachte nicht, dass Too Many Friends eine Single werden würde. Da war ich aber der Einzige! Das Label kam zu uns und wollte damit rauskommen und die Jungs auch.

In Too Many Friends geht es um Social Media Plattformen, aber auch um die neuen Arten der Kommunikation. Ist es da nicht ironisch, dass ihr die Platte über einen Internet Livestream euren Fans weltweit vorgestellt habt?
Der Song will das Internet nicht schlecht machen, auch nicht Twitter oder Facebook! Das Internet ist ein wunderbares Hilfsmittel, das viele Dinge möglich gemacht hat. Aber die ganzen sozialen Netzwerkseiten sollen Menschen zusammenbringen – tun sie das? Irgendwie sicher, immerhin können Leute wie du und ich miteinander chatten und du kannst meine Band anhören, das ist cool! Aber mittlerweile ist es so weit gegangen, dass nichts davon mehr passiert. So viele Menschen sind in Bildschirmen verloren, dass wir die menschliche Note verlieren. Das spricht der Song an.

Loud Like Love wurde von Adam Noble produziert. Würdet ihr noch eine CD mit ihm aufnehmen? Das wäre ja eine Premiere, weil ihr noch nie mehr als ein Album mit einem Produzenten aufgenommen habt.
Das ist auch gut, so bekommt man einen anderen Vibe! Aber ich wäre glücklich, wieder mit ihm zu arbeiten. Er hat großartige Ideen und ist super im Studio! Er gibt sowohl jedem einzeln als auch der Gruppe die richtige Aufmerksamkeit und auch den Tracks. Sein Einfluss auf das Album war gewaltig, er ist quasi zum vierten Bandmitglied geworden! Beim Produzenten von Battle For The Sun, David Bottrill, war das anders. Mit manchen kommt man super klar und mit anderen nicht. Mit Adam würde ich jederzeit wieder arbeiten.

Du hast schon verraten, welches dein Lieblingslied des Albums ist. Welcher Song würdest du sagen hat die coolsten Lyrics und welcher die beste musikalische Untermalung?
Exit Wounds was den Text angeht, daran haben wir wochenlang gearbeitet. Brian kam eines Tages ins Studio und meinte, er hätte eine Idee für den Refrain: “Want you so bad I can taste it.” Wir wussten sofort; das ist es! Man kann sich so damit identifizieren! Wenn ich den Text höre, denke ich gleich daran, meine Exfreundin mit einem Typen zu sehen und an dieses schlimme Gefühl im Magen! Was die Musik angeht, mag ich Purify gern, genauso wie Begin The End. Ich könnte den ganzen Tag erklären, was mir an jeder Nummer gefällt! Aber Purify ist schon sehr cool. Brian macht diese harmonischen Akkorde und das Schlagzeug macht auch viel Spaß!

Live verändert ihr Songs oft. Gibt es auf Loud Like Love ein Lied, bei dem du denkst, dass man es gar nicht anders spielen kann?
Momentan würde ich das über die Meisten sagen! Wir arrangieren die Songs live anders, weil wir sie schon so lang spielen und es irgendwann natürlich wird. Je nachdem, wie die Stimmung des Konzerts ist, verändert man dann was. Oft wünscht man sich dann, der Song, so wie man ihn zum Ende der Tour spielt, wäre auf dem Album! Weil man die Zeit hatte, richtig daran zu feilen. Aber das ist ja auch schön. Wenn man eine Band sieht, will man nicht das Album hören – man will es live hören! Ich war mal auf dem Konzert einer meiner absoluten Lieblingsbands, Death Cab For Cutie und das war eine große Enttäuschung! Ich hatte mich echt darauf gefreut und sie waren fantastisch, aber sie klangen exakt wie auf CD! Dieselben Töne, alles! Als ich zu Placebo kam, sagten Brian und Stef, ich könnte mit den Tracks machen, was ich will. Von Teenage Angst oder Meds haben wir mittlerweile fünf Versionen. Das macht es weiter interessant und spaßig! Wenn man so lange auf Tour ist und einen Gig nach dem anderen spielt können einen die Songs leicht kalt lassen. Aber durch das Verändern haben wir bei den Konzerten genauso viel Spaß wie die Fans und das sind die besten Shows!

Letztes Jahr wart ihr Headliner am Frequency Festival und musstet den Gig wegen Krankheit von Brian abbrechen.
Oh Gott!

Das war natürlich eine Scheißsituation, aber eure Fans haben das natürlich auch verstanden. Was viele jedoch verwirrt hat, war, dass ihr einen Tag darauf in der Schweiz wieder gespielt habt. Kannst du die Situation kurz aufklären?!
Das war nicht meine Entscheidung…

Du bist lange auf der Bühne geblieben. Wusstest du, was abgeht?
Ich wusste, was los ist, ja. Und es war eine Tragödie, von der Bühne gehen zu müssen! Wir waren begeistert, da zu sein und Bands anzuschauen. The Cribs, Wilco und Noel Gallager waren echt gut. Nach den tollen Auftritten hatten wir uns darauf gefreut, selbst eine super Performance hinzulegen! Es war wirklich enttäuschend, gesagt zu bekommen, jetzt von der Bühne runter zu müssen und ich war sehr wütend danach! Aber solche Dinge passieren leider, Dinge, die nicht in unserer Macht liegen. Wenn wir im November wieder da sind, werden wir es dafür richtig krachen lassen!

Ich bin mir sicher das werdet ihr! Worauf können sich die Fans besonders freuen?
Es wird verdammt aufregend! Wir können endlich die neuen Songs spielen! Auch besonders wegen dem letzten Mal wird das Konzert voll Energie und ein Mordsspaß! Letztes Mal haben wir euch quasi heißgemacht und dies Mal tun wir’s richtig! (lacht)

Interview with Placebo



In a hotel on the Ringstrasse we met Steve Forrest from Placebo for an interview. We spoke with the charming drummer on the new album Loud Like Love and left us the debacle of the Frequency Festival 2012 once again explain!

Hey Steve! Are you okay ?
Yes , I'm still the best ! Travel around even after four full days and give interviews .

You are now in nearly six years in the band. Do you feel as a full member , even if it was already long before the band ?
I did from the beginning. The boys had a great way , so I felt welcome . When I joined , I did not know how great the band was , or that it even existed ! So it was not for me when I would come to placebo. I was pleased rather to making music with a couple of lads ! Musically, from day one the right chemistry there. Private Brian and Stefan had also a wire that will eventually have known each other forever! I knew that they had their thing and I had to get used to it and to them. In recent years, we have been through so much but that has bound us together . In particular, the recording of the album now . You can hear it in the songs , this unit to which we have become. We are now like brothers.

Your new album is called Loud Like Love and is so far the most positive album title . Whence comes it?
During the recording we had a good time ! You can not always write about negative ! Life is not only negative, it also has beautiful pages! Loud Like Love was the first track of the album , we wrote . When we started jamming , Brian came up with the phrase 'Loud Like Love ' . We were immediately impressed and moved us closer to busy to make it to the recurring theme. But we did not 'typical' I love you, come make Me ' songs . We wanted to write about love in all its pages . ' According as love ' for us is an orgasm , a crying baby, a football match or a beautiful painting , the one staring for days - an abstract work of art that is a yelling , but not heard. Or how one feels when a family member dies. It's exciting to look at it that way.

So you are not going to the studio and have decided to write about relationships of people to each other ? In many of your old songs so it was more about the relationship of people to drugs.
It still does ! No, kidding! In the last couple of albums and EPs that I've made with the guys we have never before sat down to discuss what exactly we do. It always comes down to how you are while writing it.

Why have you chosen for Too Many Friends Like Love Loud as singles ?
Once we had Loud Like Love written we knew it would be a single. We could not stop playing it or listening to ! It is still my favorite track on the album ! Although I love them all , but the song is something special. He is sexy, cool and fun ! So that was a clear choice . I personally did not think Too Many Friends would be a single. But since I was the only one! The label came to us and wanted to come out with it and the guys .

Too Many Friends Add it comes to social media platforms, but also to new ways of communication . Is not it ironic that you have presented an Internet live stream to your fans worldwide the plate ?
The song will make the Internet not bad, not Twitter or Facebook! The Internet is a wonderful tool that has made many things possible. But all the social networking sites to bring people together - they do that? Somehow sure , after all, people like you and I can chat with each other and you can listen to my band , that's cool ! But now it's gone so far that none of this happens more . So many people are lost in screens that we lose the human touch . This speaks to the song .

Loud Like Love was produced by Adam Noble. Would you take him as a CD ? That would be a first , because you have never recorded more than an album with a producer .
This is also good, so you get a different vibe ! But I would be happy to work with him again . He has great ideas and is great in the studio ! It is used both individually as well as each group the right attention and also the tracks. His influence on the album was huge , he's almost become the fourth member of the band ! The producer of Battle For The Sun , David Bottrill , it was different. With some it is not super clear and with others. I would work with Adam again at any time .

You've been betrayed , which is your favorite song of the album. Which song would you say has the coolest lyrics and what the best background music ?
Exit Wounds in terms of the text , we have worked on for weeks. Brian came into the studio one day and said he had an idea for the chorus : We knew immediately, that's it "Want you so bad I can taste it . " ! One can thus identify with it! When I listen to the lyrics, I think it right to see my ex-girlfriend with a guy and this bad feeling in my stomach ! As for the music , I like Purify like , as Begin The End. I could explain all day, what I like about each number ! But Purify is very cool. Brian makes these harmonic chords and the drums also a lot of fun !

Live changed their songs often . Is it on Loud Love Like a song where you think that you can not play it differently ?
Right now I would say that about the most! We arrange the songs live differently because we play for so long and it will eventually of course . Depending on how the mood of the concert is , then what you changed . Often one wishes then , the song as it is played to the end of the tour would be on the album ! Because you had the time to really hone it. But that is also beautiful. When you see a band that does not want to hear the album you - you want to hear it live ! I was once at the concert one of my favorite bands , Death Cab For Cutie and that was a big disappointment ! I had really been looking forward to it and they were fantastic , but they sounded exactly like on CD! The same sounds , everything! When I came to placebo , said Brian and Stef , I could do with the tracks, what I want. Of teenage angst or meds we have now five versions . That makes it more interesting and fun ! If one is so long on tour , playing a gig after another can make the songs a slightly cold. But by changing the concerts we have just as much fun as the fans and those are the best shows !

Last year, were you at the Frequency Festival and headlined the gig Did you have to cancel due to illness of Brian .
Oh, God !

Of course that was a shitty situation, but your fans have obviously understood. What , however, has confused many was that you played one days out in Switzerland again . Can you briefly explain the situation ?
That was not my decision ...

You stayed on stage for long. Did you know what's going on ?
I knew what 's going on , yes. And it was a tragedy to have to go on the stage! We were thrilled to be there and watch bands. The Cribs , Wilco and Noel Gallager were really good . After the great performances we had been looking forward to even lie down a great performance! It was really disappointing to be told , now need to off the stage and I was very angry after that ! But unfortunately these things happen , things that are not in our power. If we are back in November , we'll let it rip this right!

I 'm sure you will ! What can the fans can be crazy ?
It will be very exciting! We can finally play the new songs ! Also especially because the last time the concert is full of energy and a blast ! Last time we made ​​you almost hot , and this time let's do it right! (laughs )
