Kinder, wie die Zeit vergeht: Bald ist es 20 Jahre her, dass Engelsstimme Brian Molko und der lange Schwede Stefan Olsdal uns eine grandiose Band namens Placebo geschenkt haben. Im Zwiegespräch mit VOLUME: Ein erstaunlich ehrlicher und nachdenklicher Herr Olsdal – über das neue Album, die "Handys beim Konzert"-Seuche und warum die Herren nach dem Frequency Festival 2012 den österreichischen Fans noch etwas schuldig sind.
Bei eurem neuen Album sticht vor allem der letzte Song ("Bosco") heraus. Ein bittersüßes Stück Musik, das so gar nicht nach Placebo klingt…(denkt lange nach) Das wurde zu einer Zeit geschrieben, als wir gar nicht mehr vorhatten, noch ein Album aufzunehmen. Damals war null Selbstbewusstsein in der Band, wir waren emotional am Boden, spürten aber auch keinen Druck, weshalb "Bosco" wohl so anders klingt. Ich kann mich gut an den Tag erinnern, als ich die Musik komponiert habe, Brian den Song schnappte und diesen Gänsehauttext eines mit sich selbst kämpfenden Alkoholikers dazu schrieb. Heraus kam dieses herzzerreißende Stück als wunderbares Ende des Albums.
In "Too Many Friends" geht es um die Auswirkungen sozialer Netzwerke. Es gibt Situationen, wo Freunde am Abend gemeinsam weggehen und trotzdem starrt jeder nur auf sein Smartphone. Was denkst du, wie das weitergehen wird?Über die Zukunft können wir nur theoretisieren, aber was mir bei alten "Star Trek"-Folgen aufgefallen ist: Die hatten das Tablet lange, bevor es Realität wurde. Oder den Film "Minority Report", wo Werbung für Individuen personalisiert wurde. Auch das ist längst real. Computer nehmen uns immer mehr eigene Denkprozesse ab. Bevor du eine Stadtkarte liest, fragst du lieber dein Telefon nach dem Weg. Traurig! Vielleicht enden wir ja wirklich in einem Szenario, wo Maschinen eine eigene Persönlichkeit entwickeln und dann die Menschheit unterwerfen. Die Frage in "Too Many Friends" ist, ob uns Dinge wie Facebook eher zusammenbringen oder voneinander entfernen. Die Person im Song vereinsamt jedenfalls.
Wie fühlt es sich an, während Konzerten da oben zu stehen und in tausende kleine Mobiltelefonobjektive zu blicken statt in die Augen der Menschen dahinter?Das Extremste, das ich selbst jemals gesehen habe, war während dem Konzert von Rufus Wainwright in Madrid. Eine Halle mit Sitzplätzen, neben mir hielt ein Typ seinen riesigen Laptop in die Luft und filmte. Rufus unterbrach den wirklich ruhigen Song und meinte zu ihm höflich: "Entschuldigen Sie, aber ich empfinde das als störend. Wären Sie so nett, das Ding zuzuklappen?" Was er auch gemacht hat, allerdings widerwillig. Wie wenn Rufus ihn gestört hätte und nicht umgekehrt. Wenn du selbst auf der Bühne stehst, nervt es am meisten in den ersten paar Reihen. Ich kann trotzdem irgendwie nachvollziehen, wenn jemand auf diese Weise seine Erinnerungen festhalten will, glaube aber nicht, dass verwackelte Videos eine bessere Erinnerung sind als mit allen Sinnen den Moment zu genießen. Egal, man kann das ohnehin nicht mehr stoppen. Wir ignorieren es einfach!
Musstet ihr auch euren Drummer Steve Forrest ignorieren, als er richtig sauer war, dass ihr auf dem neuen Album soviel Elektronikzeug und Drumloops verwendet habt?(lacht) Sagen wir so: Es hat ein bisschen gedauert, bis er es verstanden und akzeptiert hat. Aber ich denke, auch er würde dir sagen, dass er mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden ist.
In der letzten Dekade wart ihr gefühlte 365 Tage im Jahr auf Tour. Freut man sich da überhaupt noch aufs Reisen? Oder denkt ihr euch: "Oh, Japan, wieder eine Woche Sushi."?(lacht) Lustig, da waren wir gerade. Aber Gewohnheit stellt sich nicht ein, nein. Im Gegenteil: Jetzt, wo wir die neuen Songs spielen, bin ich sogar ziemlich nervös. Du willst nichts falsch machen, und da ist immer diese pathologische Angst vor einem abweisenden Publikum im Hintergrund. Es klingt vielleicht komisch, aber man ist da oben ziemlich verletzlich. Obwohl das durchaus auch eine gesunde Angst ist.
Kommendes Jahr feiert ihr euer 20jähriges Bandjubiläum. Was war der schönste, was der schlimmste Moment in dieser Zeit?Schwierige Frage, weil oft hat Placebo hervorragend funktioniert, während es mir gleichzeitig schrecklich ging – manchmal war's genau umgekehrt. Als wir David Bowie im Madison Square Garden supported haben – gemeinsam mit all unseren Helden wie Robert Smith von The Cure, Sonic Youth oder Frank Black – war das sicher ein musikalisches Highlight unserer Bandgeschichte. Nur persönlich war ich damals ein komplettes Wrack. Womit wir auch schon bei den schlimmsten Momenten wären, an die ich mich aber kaum erinnere, weil ich so anästhesiert war. Um es sanft auszudrücken. Da sind zu viele schwarze Löcher und Lücken, auf die ich nicht besonders stolz bin.
In einer offenen Wunde muss VOLUME trotzdem noch stochern: Wie hast du dich gefühlt, als Brian letztes Jahr beim Frequency Festival nach nur einem Song von der Bühne verschwunden ist?(langer Seufzer) Als würde dir jemand zehn Tonnen Ziegelsteine auf den Kopf fallen lassen. Mir tut das auch deshalb Leid, dass es ausgerechnet euch in Österreich erwischt hat, weil unser Management danach zusammengezählt hat, wie viele Shows wir in unserer Karriere bisher versemmelt haben. Und es sind von über eintausend Shows tatsächlich nur 12 Aussetzer dabei. Ich muss es aus dieser Perspektive sehen und mir denken, dass es nicht oft vorkommt! Im Namen der Band verspreche ich aber hiermit hoch und heilig, dass wir das im November in Wien wieder gutmachen!

WE MAKE IT GOOD AGAIN!Children, as time passes: Soon it was 20 years ago that angelic voice of Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal tall Swede who gave us a terrific band called Placebo. In conversation with VOLUME: An amazingly honest and thoughtful Mr. Olsdal - about the new album, the men are the Austrian fans still owe "phones in the concert" disease and why after the Frequency Festival, 2012.
With the new album , especially the last song ( " Bosco " ) stands out . A bittersüßes stucco music, so do not sound like Placebo ...(thinks for a long time ) This was written at a time when we no longer were going to record another album . At that time was zero confidence in the band, we were emotionally at the bottom , but also no pressure spurts , so " Bosco " probably sounds so different. I can well remember the day when I composed the music , Brian grabbed the text of a song and these creeps fighting with himself wrote alcoholic . Out came this heartbreaking stucco as a wonderful end of the album .
In " Too Many Friends " is about the effects of social networks . There are situations where friends on a night out together and yet everyone just stares at his phone . What do you think how that will go ?We can only theorize about the future , but what about me at old " Star Trek " episodes noticed : the tablet that had long before it became a reality. Or the movie " Minority Report ," where advertising for individuals was personalized. Even this is far from real Computers take us from getting more of their own thought processes. Before you read a city map , you prefer to ask your phone for directions. Sad! Maybe we really end even in a scenario where machines develop their own personality and then throw humanity. The question in " Too Many Friends" is whether we bring together things like Facebook or more apart. The person in the song lonely anyway.
How it feels to be during concerts to stand up there and look at thousands of small mobile phone lenses held in the eyes of the people behind it ?The most extreme , which I myself have ever seen was during the concert by Rufus Wainwright in Madrid. A hall with seats, a guy next to me kept his giant laptop into the air and filmed . Rufus interrupted the quiet song really polite and said to him, " Excuse me, but I feel this is a problem Would you be so kind To collapse the thing . ? " What he has done , however reluctantly. As if Rufus would have disturbed him, and not vice versa. If you 're even around on stage , it sucks most in the first few rows . I can somehow understand if someone wants to keep his memory in this way anyway, but do not think that shaky videos are a better memory than to enjoy with all your senses the moment. No matter , you can not stop anyway . We just ignore it !
Did you have to ignore your drummer Steve Forrest, when he was really pissed that you have used on the new album so much electronic stuff and drum loops ?(laughs ) Let's just say this: It took a little while , until he has understood and accepted. But I think he also was to tell you that he is satisfied with the result.
In the last decade it gefühlte waiting 365 days a year on tour. One looks forward since überhaupt yet started to travel ? Or, you think to yourself , "Oh , Japan, back a week sushi. " ?(laugh ) Funny, we were just . But habit does not adapt , no. On the contrary, now that we're playing the new songs , I 'm actually quite nervous. You want to do anything wrong , and there is always this pathological fear of a resistant audience in the background. It may sound funny , but it 's up there pretty vulnerable. Although this is quite a healthy fear .
Next year celebrates your 20th band anniversary . What was the best thing the worst moment in this time ?Difficult question , because often placebo worked brilliantly , while at the same time I was terrible - sometimes it was the other way around . As we have David Bowie at Madison Square Garden supported - along with all our heroes like Robert Smith of The Cure, Sonic Youth or Frank Black - was certainly a musical highlight of our band's history. Only person I was a complete wreck . What we already were at the worst moments , which I hardly remember because I was so anesthetized . To put it gently print . There are too many black holes and gaps , which I 'm not particularly proud of.
In an open wound must still poking VOLUME : How did you gefühlt when Brian last year at the Frequency Festival is gone after just one song from the stage ?( long sigh ) When you let someone was ten tons of bricks fall on your head . I do that also therefore sorry that it has calculated you get caught up in Austria , because our management has added up according to how many shows we have messed up in our career so far . And it's available via thousand of shows actually only 12 dropouts there. I have to see it from that perspective and I think that it does not happen often ! In the name of the band but I hereby solemnly promise that we make it up in Vienna in November again!
