Placebo im Interview – Teil 118. November 2013
Brian Molko ist, wie man so schön sagt, ein musikalisches Multitalent. In jungen Jahren brachte er sich das Gitarre spielen selber bei und beherrscht mittlerweile eine ganze Reihe von Instrumenten.
Auch wenn er gelegentlich als DJ einheizt, ist er natürlich vor allem als Frontmann von Placebo bekannt. Am 26. November spielen die Jungs bei den Telekom Street Gigs in der Zeche Zollverein in Essen. Deshalb läuft bei uns ihr neues Album „Loud Like Love“ gerade rauf und runter.
Im Vergleich zu früheren Alben klingt das aktuelle doch etwas zuversichtlicher, vielleicht weil Placebo gar nicht vor hatten ein Album aufzunehmen: „Wir hatten gerade ein neues Label gefunden und wollten vor der Sommer-Tour lediglich ein Greatest Hits-Album veröffentlichen. Es stellte sich aber schnell heraus, dass das keine besonders gute Idee war, da keine zufriedenstellenden Ergebnisse dabei rauskamen.” Ganz umsonst war es dann aber doch nicht, denn in dieser Zeit schrieben sie dann den ersten und letzten Song des späteren Albums „Loud Like Love“, erinnert sich Brian. „Der eine ist sehr optimistisch, energetisch und fröhlich, während der andere eher melancholisch und pessimistisch ist. Die Songs dazwischen bewegen sich zwischen härteren und rockigeren bis hin zu düstereren und elektronischen Klängen.” Ein sehr abwechslungsreiches Album, mit dem Brian Molko mehr als zufrieden ist: „Wenn dies das letzte Album sein sollte, wäre es keine Enttäuschung!“
Dabei waren die Aufnahmen nicht völlig problemlos, wie Brian erzählt: „Bei jedem Album gibt es Überraschungen und „Loud Like Love“ war da keine Ausnahme. Wir haben es nicht in einem Rutsch aufgenommen, sondern verteilt über mehrere Sessions in 2012 und 2013. In der Vergangenheit sind wir immer ins Studio gegangen und haben es in einem durchgezogen. Das war dieses Mal also eher ungewöhnlich.“ Der Band kamen dann teilweise Zweifel, ob das Album jemals fertig werden würde, „weil dieses Anfangen und Aufhören den natürlichen Prozess unterbricht. Einige Songs wurden erst ganz zum Ende des Mixings geschrieben und existierten vorher gar nicht.“ Doch diese Schwierigkeiten mündeten dann in ein Happy End: „Ich persönlich hatte das Gefühl, nachdem wir zum Jahresende noch den Song „Begin The End“ komponierten, dass wir etwas Großartiges und Unerwartetes geschaffen hatten. Genau in dem Moment, dachte ich mir: kein schlechter Tag zum Sterben!! Schade, dass dieses Gefühl nur einige Minuten andauerte.“
Die erste Single aus dem Album ist der Song „Too Many Friends“. Ein klares Statement in unserer von Social Media beeinflussten Welt. Brian sieht diese Entwicklung durchaus kritisch: „Du wirst so schnell abgelenkt, wenn du einmal angefangen hast, durch das Internet zu surfen und ich bin oft in der Situation, dass ich aufhören muss und mich selbst frage, ob meine Zeit dafür nicht zu schade ist.“ Ganz auf die neuen Medien verzichtet er dann aber doch nicht. „Ich benutze die Technik, um mit den Menschen zu kommunizieren, die mir wichtig sind, aber ich nutze keine Sozialen Netzwerke. Meine Band benutzt es, um mit unseren Fans und Followern in Kontakt zu bleiben, aber persönlich reichen mir Telefongespräche und Emails.“

The recordings were not without problems , as Brian says : "Every album there are surprises and " Loud Like Love " was no exception . We have not included it in one go , but over several sessions in 2012 and 2013. In the past we have always gone into the studio and have pulled it off in one. So this time it was rather unusual. " The band then came partially doubts whether the album would ever be done, " because this Start and Stop interrupts the natural process. Some songs were not written until the very end of the mixings and not previously existed " But these difficulties then led to a happy ending ." I personally felt after we composed for the end of the year the song " Begin The End" that we something great and unexpected had created . Just at the moment , I thought, not a bad day to die ! Too bad that this feeling lasted only a few minutes. "
The first single from the album is the song " Too Many Friends." A clear statement of social media influence in our world . Brian sees this development critically : "You're so quickly distracted, once you've started to surf the internet and I am often in the situation that I have to stop and ask myself whether my time for this is not too bad . "All of the new media, he does not waive but then . "I use the technology to communicate with the people who are important to me , but I do not use social networks . My band used it to stay connected with our fans and followers in touch, but personally give me phone calls and emails. "
